Scholar Mine

front-cover.jpeg

In September of ‘85, I gave him the death desk.  Maybe it was the tint of his eyes or the way he moved, but what really killed me was the godlike composure, the untouchable cool. He wasn't going to get away with it, so he ended up with the death desk. Despite his innocence.

Whenever my mind wanders back to the death desk, I can't help but drift back a little farther, when his application for graduate school landed in my hands. He would have scoffed at the notion of love at first sight, let alone love before first sight. In fact, love before first sight turned out to be one of the perks of my new job at Ohio State.

And if I hadn’t taken just that job, in just that department, in just that university with over fifty thousand students, I wouldn’t be telling this story.
